4 Carolina Panthers who are generating plenty of buzz at camp
By Dean Jones
Mike Davis – RB
There were plenty of questions surround Mike Davis and his ability to make the 53-man roster. This was down to other candidates vying for the No. 2 running back role behind Christian McCaffrey and the $3 million in base salary the player is due next season.
Davis has looked supremely motivated during training camp so far. He has made the very most of his touches and he not only looks set to secure a place on the team, but he might also be the new frontrunner to be McCaffrey’s primary backup.
The back got another boost to his aspirations when the Panthers parted ways with 2019 fifth-round pick Jordan Scarlett on Sunday. This might have come as something of a surprise given that the player had not been given much of a chance on the field. But it is a further indication as to the level of confidence that the Panthers’ coaching staff has in Davis to get the job done when called upon.
Touches are going to be few and far between for anyone below McCaffrey on the depth chart. So it is important that they are ready, willing, and able at the drop of a hat.
Davis has been a solid if not spectacular contributor at the pro level. That is all the Panthers probably need from their backup running backs and the player might have earned himself a nice little payday if his strong showing leads to a roster spot.
