3 reasons why Derrick Brown will transform the Panthers defense
By Dean Jones
Winning mentality
Do not let Derrick Brown’s calm exterior fool you. Underneath there is a ruthless individual on the field who demands nothing but the best from himself and others around him.
The Carolina Panthers went through the motions somewhat in 2019 despite having plenty of established veterans on the roster. This is all going to change with Brown on the interior whether he is a rookie or not. And it is going to be a tremendous asset to have on this current group.
Brown might not be the most vocal on the field. But he leads by example and is not afraid to speak his mind when things are not going the team’s way. This winning mentality is another reason why the defensive tackle has the potential to completely transform their fortunes on defense.
The first-rounder did not win SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 for nothing. Brown was a relentless force on almost every snap. And his ability to motivate and inspire others around him was another standout feature of his overall game.
Whether veterans will respond to this from a first-year pro remains to be seen. Brown seems to have commanded the respect of his teammates during training camp so far. And if they are not pulling their weight, he will be the first to let them know.
This is the sort of leader that the Panthers are looking for. And the sky is the limit for Brown.
