P.J. Williams – CB

The Carolina Panthers might be in the market for more cornerback help if their current group fails to reach their billing during the early stages of the campaign. There are still plenty of good options on the free-agent market. But someone like P.J. Williams is also an option to consider.

Williams has been a solid if not spectacular performer for the New Orleans Saints during his career. The former third-round pick has had some good moments. But he has failed to remove standout duo Marshon Lattimore and Janoris Jenkins from starting positions on the depth chart at training camp so far.

There might still be plenty of opportunities for Williams to shine as the nickel corner. He does play well in the slot in addition to the outside and this sort of versatility is something that the Panthers’ coaching staff has looked for in almost every recruit this offseason.

Williams was targeted heavily in 2019 as opposing defenses primarily picked on him and current Carolina player Eli Apple to gain yardage. This resulted in the corner giving up 45 receptions from 63 balls thrown his way.

It might be considered something of a down year for Williams. But he has plenty of talent to bounce back providing his confidence is where it has been previously.

He was awarded a new one-year deal this offseason in what appears to be his final chance to make a big impression in New Orleans. However, if the Panthers were to make a solid offer to acquire the player, then they would strongly consider it.
