Stop the run efficiently

One of the real problems that the Carolina Panthers encountered in 2019 was their inability to stop the run. They generated plenty of sacks throughout the campaign. But it did not have any sort of impact on their overall fortunes last season.

The Panthers did lose veteran defensive tackle Kawann Short after just two games with a torn rotator cuff. This played a leading role in their eventual demise with nobody stepping up to fill the Pro Bowler’s enormous shoes.

Short is back at full health in 2020. He appears fit and raring to go at training camp. And he will be further aided on the interior by the presence of No. 7 overall pick Derrick Brown.

The first-round selection comes into the Panthers with the highest of ceilings. Brown has been a dominant force at training camp so far and his partnership alongside Short has the ability to completely transform their fortunes in this area of the field.

If they can provide a stout run presence next season. It is going to take the pressure of a secondary that comes with more questions than answers.

Building from the inside-out was something that Matt Rhule highlighted as a prominent desire during the first year of his rebuild in Carolina. And hopes are high that this tandem can be a prolific force from the first snap to last.
