4 pleasant surprises for the Carolina Panthers at training camp
By Dean Jones
Mike Davis – RB
To say Mike Davis had his work cut out making the Carolina Panthers’ 53-man roster before training camp would be something of an understatement. The running back was fighting for a role behind All-Pro Christian McCaffrey and many made him a prime candidate for release thanks to the $3 million in base salary he is set to make in 2020.
Davis has responded with an exceptional showing at camp that makes him a virtual lock to make the team. He has dazzled on the field during team drills throughout. And this is something that has drawn significant praise from head coach Matt Rhule.
It remains to be seen whether Davis has done enough to beat out Reggie Bonnafon to the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. But the back deserves a tremendous amount of credit for the way he has applied himself in recent weeks.
His combination of speed and power has been a telling feature that has caught the eye on multiple occasions. There might be an opportunity for the primary backup to see more carries in 2020 to take some pressure off McCaffrey. Davis is now under strong consideration for this role thanks to a camp contribution that has been nothing short of sensational. But he will need to keep up this high level of play during the business end of preparations to further enhance his claims.
