Carolina Panthers trade target: Chidobe Awuzie – Cowboys

If the Carolina Panthers want to make a big splash in the trade market before Week 1, then Chidobe Awuzie is a name that should be high on the shortlist. The talented cornerback goes into the season as a starting option for the Dallas Cowboys. But given their lack of salary cap space to extend the player next year, getting something in return might be something they would consider if the price is right.

Awuzie has everything one looks for in a standout player at the position. The former second-round pick showcased his outstanding skill set in no uncertain terms in 2019 despite being targeted heavily, giving up 56 targets from 90 balls thrown his way.

This earned Awuzie a creditable 72.2 grade from Pro Football Focus, which was his highest grading since 2017. The Cowboys will be counting on him to lead a young secondary through their expected growing pains. And if he takes another step forward next time around, then the Colorado product is going to command top dollar next spring.

If the cap is reduced to $175 million due to a lack of revenue in 2020, then this represents a real problem in Dallas. According to Over the Cap, the Cowboys are projected to have just $2.8 million in cap space, which might leave them with no other option than to look at getting compensation for players like Awuzie while they can.

This is something that would undoubtedly interest the Panthers if the opportunity arose. But whether they would be willing to pay what the Cowboys want is another matter entirely.
