4 UDFAs who made a big impression at Carolina Panthers camp
By Dean Jones
Chris Orr – LB
Chris Orr might have gotten off to a slow start during his first training camp in a professional environment. But there is no doubt he picked things up late on to give himself a fighting chance of making the 53-man roster.
This is an area of the field where the Carolina Panthers could do with someone under-the-radar to come through and make an impression. They lost legendary linebacker Luke Kuechly to a shock retirement this offseason. However, the perennial All-Pro is sure to have a big say in who can possibly boost this unit in his new role as a pro scout.
Orr enjoyed a standout career at Wisconsin, which was not enough for him to be drafted this spring. Orr is versatile, aggressive, and athletic in equal measure. So it would not be a surprise if was on the team for their Week 1 clash against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Having no preseason games was a crushing blow to Orr. If the Panthers decide to go with him over others with more experience, it is a shot in the dark with the prospect not having played a down in the NFL before.
There seems to be more opportunity for unproven players in Carolina than elsewhere due to their lack of expectations. But whether Orr makes the roster or not, it is hard not to be impressed with the way he applied himself at camp.
