Juston Burris – S

The Carolina Panthers have some glaring depth problems at the cornerback position. This makes the roles of Tre Boston and Juston Burris even more important on the backend against the Raiders.

Burris has caught the eye in no uncertain terms since arriving in Carolina. The safety was a solid pickup in free agency who looks set to play a significant part during the 2020 season and he could be one of the big surprises in terms of production.

There will be a baptism of fire for Burris if the likes of Donte Jackson and Troy Pride Jr. do not live up to their end of the bargain after Eli Apple placed on injured/reserve. He will need his wits about him from the word go and it could be a long afternoon for the Panthers if the former Cleveland Brown and Boston cannot cope in the face of what is expected to be some concerted pressure.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out where the Panthers defense is going to be targeted in Week 1 and beyond. They need an assured presence when their corners inevitably get burned on occasions and Burris’ contribution will be crucial in this regard.

There is every chance that the Panthers might use a three-safety set when the opportunity arises with Burris, Boston, and second-round pick Jeremy Chinn. This might take the pressure off in certain situations. But it will be up to their starting safety duo to produce a level of consistency the Panthers might not get on the outside.
