One free-agent remaining on the market who might help out the Carolina Panthers is Prince Amukamara. The cornerback was released by the Las Vegas Raiders prior to the 2020 season after failing to win a spot on the 53-man roster at training camp. But he is experienced enough to come in right away and make an immediate impact should the opportunity arise.

It’s easy to forget that Amukamara was once a first-round pick after being taken No. 19 overall by the New York Giants in 2011. He has been a solid if not spectacular performer throughout his career, which is all the Panthers are probably looking for if their Week 1 struggles are any indication.

The veteran is probably just after another chance to get back on the field after the disappointment of not being part of a Raiders’ roster that got an all-important first victory at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday. Amukamara did perform well enough for the Chicago Bears in 2019 to earn a 67.5 grade from Pro Football Focus after giving up 36 receptions from 58 targets.

The Panthers would probably not have to pay the earth to get Amukamara in on a short-term deal. Much will depend on what sort of conditioning the player is in. But the former Nebraska speedster did participate in a full camp that should enable him to hit the ground running in this particular scenario.
