4 potential Panthers draft targets who saw their stock rise in Week 2
By Dean Jones
Asante Samuel Jr. – Florida State (CB)
Asante Samuel Jr. is a chip off the old block. The talented cornerback is looking to improve his draft standing in 2020 and made a tremendous start in his first outing of the season.
The Florida State sensation was a formidable presence in the Seminoles’ secondary, coming up with important plays when it mattered most. Samuel Jr. notched two interceptions that will make NFL scouts sit up and take notice regarding just what sort of skills he brings to the table.
His technique is absolutely flawless and Samuel Jr. has the athleticism to match. Georgia Tech made the smart move to keep the ball away from the player following the second pick and it resulted in a memorable 16-13 victory.
This is no slight on Samuel Jr., who has the potential to be a prolific cornerback at the next level. His father was a standout contributor, an All-Pro, and a Super Bowl winner during a sensational career that put him among the NFL’s best once upon a time. And although these are lofty expectations to aim for, there is nothing to suggest that the projected first-round pick is not more than capable.
The Carolina Panthers need help on the outside, both in the short and long-term. Head coach Matt Rhule will be hoping Donte Jackson’s absence isn’t long term, otherwise, it is going to be a long season.
