Antoine Winfield Jr. might have been one of the lesser profile arrivals to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason. But there is little doubting his credentials to forge a successful career in the NFL.
The 2020 second-round pick out of Minnesota enjoyed a hugely encouraging debut for the Bucs in a big-time game. This enabled him to secure a lofty 77.0 grade from Pro Football Focus after a more than encouraging debut.
The rookie is following in the footsteps of his father, Antoine Winfield Sr., who enjoyed a standout career with the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills as a cornerback, earning three Pro Bowl selections.
Bring around a professional environment from an early age has clearly done Winfield Jr. the world of good. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater needs to be aware of where the safety is at all times and if he isn’t, he will be ready to pounce.
The Carolina Panthers moved the ball efficiently in Week 1 against the Raiders. This enabled them to put up 30 points in a close-fought defeat, which might not be the last time this happens in 2020 due to the uncertainty surrounding their young defense.
Something similar will be needed from the Panthers in this one, and even that might not be enough. Winfield Jr. is a sneaky threat on the backend of the Bucs’ defensive unit that has a strong football IQ and athleticism to match.
