A breakout game for David Montgomery is going to happen sooner rather than later. The running back is simply too talented to be putting up the sort of number he has of late and given how much the Carolina Panthers are struggling in this particular area, this is one of the more prominent dangers they need to thwart.

Montgomery burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2019 after being selected in the third round by the Chicago Bears. He was able to carry the load efficiently on his way to 1,074 all-purpose yards, seven touchdowns, and 267 combined touches to secure an eye-catching 66.6 grade from Pro Football Focus.

The former Iowa State standout hasn’t enjoyed the same amount of success this time around. Teams are now fully aware of the threat Montgomery brings to the table, which has restricted him to a yards-per-carry average of 3.9 from 64 touches on the ground.

He has shown signs of life over the last couple of games since Nick Foles assumed command under center, which represents bad news for the Panthers. They have lost the services of Kawann Short and Yetur Gross-Matos in this one, with the difficulties stopping the run there for all to see so far this season.

Montgomery will never get a better chance to put up considerable numbers. But if the Panthers can limit his threat, they stand a good chance of securing success.
