Cleveland Browns

The Browns have shown signs of life since the season began. But that is in spite of the production of starting quarterback Baker Mayfield.

The former No. 1 overall pick might have looked good against some less than stellar opposition through six weeks, but all this changed on Sunday when Mayfield locked horns with the vaunted defense of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mayfield does have his limitations, and his cocky demeanor gives him the biggest bullseye on his back. This will be the case for as long as the player is under center and it doesn’t appear as if Case Keenum is a viable alternative at this juncture.

Had the Browns decided to bring in Cam Newton, it would have given them a prominent backup who could slot in right away should Mayfield continue to struggle. His dominant force in the running game would be another severe threat to go alongside Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb once the latter returns to full health, which would keep them competitive in one of the league’s toughest divisions.

It remains to be seen whether Mayfield can turn things around. His consistency is fast becoming a real problem despite some outstanding weapons around him and this is going to jeopardize the Browns’ chances of making a return to the playoffs.
