Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars are a mess and things don’t seem to be getting better anytime soon. They do appear a little more competitive this time around, albeit with just one win to their name. But this is going to put them out of the running to select Trevor Lawrence at No. 1 overall due to the dismal form of the New York Jets.

They might still be able to take someone like Justin Fields or Trey Lance. But neither appears to be the sure-thing that Lawrence is.

Gardner Minshew might be an adequate signal-caller, but he is never going to be the sort of world-beater that can turn around the fortunes of a team who has been one of the NFL’s worst ever since they reached the AFC Championship game.

Had they acquired Cam Newton via a trade from the Carolina Panthers or even during free agency, this would have aided their cause considerably. The quarterback would have provided them with a nice security blanket even if the Jaguars went with Minshew initially, but there is no doubt he would see action at some stage given Jacksonville’s struggles.

At the very worst, he would have been a nice short-term option. But given what Newton has shown so far this season from a performance and health perspective, getting a longer commitment is a real possibility.
