4 bombshell trades the Panthers could make before 2020 deadline
By Dean Jones
Brandon Scherff – OG
Expectations couldn’t have been lower for the Carolina Panthers’ offensive line heading into the season, particularly regarding their interior protection. Thankfully their level of production has been largely encouraging. But the way things unfolded against the Bears would indicate a better guard needs to be sought sooner rather than later.
This is not as pressing as some other position groups that look devoid of any depth or quality. However, if they want to improve this area regardless, then exploring a possible trade for Brandon Scherff from the Washington Football Team makes a ton of sense.
The lineman is currently playing on the franchise tag and is making just over $15 million in 2020. Scherff is a prime candidate to depart in free agency, so Washington might be inclined to get something for him now rather than risk losing the player for nothing next spring.
Scherff has given up one sack and no penalties from 172 snaps this season on his way to a 66.6 grade from Pro Football Focus. He was recently activated from the reserve/injured list, which is another positive. But whether former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera will want to do a deal with the team that fired him is up for debate.
They did manage to work out a trade for Kyle Allen this offseason, so nothing is impossible.
