Stephon Gilmore – New England Patriots

The New England Patriots are a team in transition. Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton hasn’t been the savior they’d hoped for so far, which down to a distinct lack of talent around him and a defense that was decimated by opt-outs relating to COVID-19.

According to recent reports, the Patriots are looking to move Stephon Gilmore before the deadline for some valuable draft capital, although talk of a possible rebuild has been laughed off by head coach Bill Belichick. There would be no shortage of suitors for the shutdown cornerback, who is still regarded as one of the best in the business despite his inconsistent play in 2020.

Gilmore was the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 after giving up just 47 receptions from 94 balls thrown in his direction. This resulted in a lofty 82.8 grade from Pro Football Focus and a reputation that few have accumulated in recent years.

His play has regressed this season, of that there is little doubt. But the Patriots are a shell of their former selves and a change of scenery for Gilmore might be the best possible solution at this juncture.

New England is sure to drive a hard bargain with any team calling about Gilmore’s availability. The former No. 10 overall pick is no stranger to the area after playing his college football at South Carolina and rumors surrounding the player putting his house for sale have only fanned the flames of a potential trade.
