Mike Davis – Carolina Panthers RB

Mike Davis has been one of the biggest surprises of the season. The Carolina Panthers were dealt the worst of blows when star running back Christian McCaffrey was forced off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a high ankle sprain that’s kept him out ever since. But their primary backup left his mark in no uncertain terms.

The fact Davis was even on the roster going into Week 1 was an achievement. The player’s $3 million in base salary made him a prime candidate for release. However, a starring display during training camp was matched by outstanding production when he was thrust into a starting role.

Although Davis’ level of influence has waned over the last couple of games, he has done more than enough to continue getting some touches even when McCaffrey returns, which could be as early as this weekend at the Kansas City Chiefs.

Having more than one back who can do damage is all the rage in today’s NFL. This might also see the former South Carolina prospect attract plenty of interest on the free-agent market next spring.

Teams are often reluctant to pay players at the position due to the violent nature that normally comes with injury. Davis has the tape to back up his claims as a solid piece for any roster, so Carolina might have a hard time keeping hold of him if a team with a more realistic chance of contending in 2021 wants to make the player part of their plans.
