Will Grier or P.J. Walker will overachieve

There’s a perfect storm brewing this Sunday for either P.J. Walker or Will Grier. The fact that a starter has not been announced yet is not a good sign, but either player has a good chance to have a nice game against Detroit.

First of all, it’s a huge help that this is a home game – even if Bank of America Stadium might not be anything close to capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Whichever quarterback starts should be more comfortable in front of home fans. They’ll be able to dedicate more time to prepare without having to worry about travel and playing in an unfamiliar setting.

Second, the Lions defense is bad by almost all measures and even a backup quarterback in the NFL should be able to take advantage of it.

Detroit is 28th in takeaways, 27th in total yards allowed per game, 29th in points allowed per game, 30th in rushing yards allowed per game, and 24th in passing yards allowed per game. With rankings like that, don’t be surprised if Grier or Walker have a great game, especially if the offense flows through the run game.

The Lions may prevail as they continue to battle in the NFC playoff hunt, but the Carolina Panthers’ offense is certainly in a position to have a nice day.
