4 Panthers role-players who must be re-signed in 2021
By Dean Jones
Corn Elder – Carolina Panthers CB
Another cornerback who has staked a notable claim for a new contract next spring is Corn Elder. He fought hard to book his spot on the 53-man roster during training camp and has followed this up with some exceptional production through the first 12 games of the season.
Elder has been used primarily in the slot, a role he looks accomplished occupying. He has given up 26 receptions from 39 targets in 2020 on his way to a creditable 69.0 grade from Pro Football Focus, which is easily the best production of his career so far.
Not only has Elder done a good job in pass coverage, but the Miami product has been a real asset in run support that shouldn’t be overlooked when it’s time for the decision-makers to discuss who will be kept around and who’s going to be let go.
After a preparation period of unprecedented change from to-to-bottom in Carolina, gaining some semblance of continuity is needed this time around despite the obvious need for better reinforcements.
Elder’s contribution this season is going to make it very difficult for the Panthers to part ways with the player. But they might also decide that Stantley Thomas-Oliver and Troy Pride Jr. deserve more opportunities next year.
