4 Panthers role-players who must be re-signed in 2021
By Dean Jones
Mike Davis – Carolina Panthers RB
We listed Mike Davis as a player who might not be around in 2021 a few weeks ago. But that doesn’t mean the Carolina Panthers shouldn’t do everything in their power to extend the veteran beyond this season.
Davis has been one of the key members of the offense due to Christian McCaffrey’s frustrating period out with shoulder and ankle injuries. He’s carried the load in the All-Pro’s absence and done well despite the odd poor outing once opposing teams got useful film on just how dangerous he is.
Having a primary backup who can step up and ensure the playbook doesn’t alter whenever McCaffrey is forced to miss time has become important. The face of the franchise hadn’t missed a game before this season, but his ailments in 2020 are a big reminder of the precarious situation regarding over-dependence on running backs due to the violent nature of the position.
Davis has 833 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns to his name through 12 weeks of the season. This is outstanding production whichever way you look at it and the Panthers should at least give the veteran an enticing offer that might just be hard to turn down.
However, if another team comes in with a similar offer and the promise of a more prominent role, then Davis isn’t going to say no to that at this stage of his career.
