Which former Carolina Panthers players are largely forgotten about?

There have been many great players throughout the brief history of the Carolina Panthers. But some will probably be remembered more than others.

The names of Cam Newton, Steve Smith, Luke Kuechly, and Julius Pepper will live through the ages after all they gave the Carolina Panthers throughout their careers, and rightfully so. But these players wouldn’t have been given a platform to shine unless others paved the way first.

It didn’t take long for the Panthers to announce themselves on the NFL scene. Their shock playoff appearance in 1996 set the tone almost immediately and although the organization is still looking for their first-ever Super Bowl, it’s been quite a ride for the team’s fanbase for good or bad.

We took a look at former Panthers players that you’ve probably forgotten about. But all come with their own individual story to tell.

Lamar Smith – RB

Lamar Smith had a solid if not spectacular career in the NFL, one year of which was spent with the Panthers. The running back was a hard man to stop when he generated momentum early on in games and played a decade in the league before calling it a day after the 2003 season.

Smith was a big body who could gain hard yards between the tackles. He was never going to blow you away with elite speed. But his intelligence and determination ensured he has a successful NFL career.

He turned out 11 times for Carolina during the 200 campaign, carrying the ball 202 times for 737 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. Smith was one of the better performers for a team that eventually finished with a 7-9 record, but few would now remember him.
