Johnathan Hankins – Las Vegas Raiders

Another free-agent that is going to attract plenty of interest is Johnathan Hankins. The formidable defensive tackle has been in tremendous form for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020 and would be another commanding presence on the interior to slot alongside Derrick Brown.

The Carolina Panthers might be looking for more of a three-technique that can make a difference in passing situations. But if Hankins became available at the right price, then it would be foolish not to explore the possibility.

Hankins does have his limitations. But if the Panthers want to allocate finances elsewhere and bring in the veteran on a short-term deal if presented with the chance, it could give Brown that solid role model he’s missed during his rookie campaign thanks to Kawann Short’s ongoing problems staying healthy.

Spotrac expected Hankins to get somewhere in the region of $2.9 million on a two-year, $5.8 million deal when it’s time for the veteran to explore his options in free agency. There is a chance the Raiders extend him after a successful three-year stint with the organization so far. But head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Mike Mayock are making a concerted effort to go younger in a bid to turn around their fortunes.

This sort of move wouldn’t exactly break the bank for Carolina and represents a substantially cheaper option than if they kept Short around with his incredible cap hit.
