Rodney Smith – Carolina Panthers RB

Rodney Smith could be the new bell cow for the Carolina Panthers in their final game of the season. Christian McCaffrey and Mike Davis have already been ruled out of the clash, meaning the undrafted rookie out is set to take center stage and audition for a bigger role in 2021.

There has been a lot to like about the way Smith has gone about his business so far. He is an accomplished runner who identifies gaps quickly and although he doesn’t possess elite explosiveness, he could become part of Carolina’s plans with a strong showing in Week 17.

The Panthers might be in a predicament if Davis gets a better offer in free agency. McCaffrey’s injury problems this season highlighted the need for a solid backup who can produce at the drop of a hat, which would be missing if the current No. 2 option moves elsewhere with the promise of a more increased role when his contract expires.

Smith will get first shot at staking his claim for the role. Matt Rhule has stated he’ll rotate the player with Curtis Samuel and Trenton Cannon in the backfield, but the fact of the matter is they’ll never get a better chance to see what he can do against a tremendous defense.

If Smith shows out against the Saints would solve a possible offseason problem for the Panthers. But what comes next will ultimately be down to the player.
