Which Carolina Panthers players will be glad to see the back of the 2020 season?

Few would argue that it hasn’t been an eventful 2020 season for the Carolina Panthers. Nothing much was expected of this young and relatively inexperienced group coming into the campaign and although there were some extremely encouraging moments, they do appear some way off from being considered as realistic postseason contenders in the coming years.

This won’t come as any big surprise. Head coach Matt Rhule wasn’t projected to work miracles in year one of what’s become a pretty substantial rebuild. But owner David Tepper will want to see some return from his investment after shelling out $60 million to bring the former Baylor man to Carolina.

There has been some good and plenty of bad where the Panthers are concerned. They have a lot of exciting players to build around on both sides of the ball, but clear deficiencies in key positional areas need to be rectified at the earliest possible opportunity.

Let’s take a look at four Panthers players who will be glad to see the back of the 2020 season.

Tahir Whitehead – Carolina Panthers LB

Tahir Whitehead was arguably Carolina’s worst free-agent signing of the offseason. Replacing Luke Kuechly at the inside linebacker spot was the most daunting of tasks. But his distinct lack of production will make the decision to cut ties with the player this offseason an easy one.

Whitehead just hasn’t done enough. Nobody will know that more than the player himself and although he was only ever considered to be a short-term solution, it’s hard not to look at his contribution and not be disappointed.

Whether Whitehead will get another chance with a different team in 2021 remains to be seen. But his days as a starter in the NFL are probably a thing of the past.
