4 dream candidates for the Panthers’ vacant QB coach job
By Dean Jones
Shawn Watson
It appears as if the Carolina Panthers might be stuck with Teddy Bridgewater next season. The free-agent signing doesn’t have an out regarding his deal until 2022 and even if there is sure to be more competition for the right to be under center once competitive action gets underway, he remains the favorite despite the increasing uncertainty surrounding the player.
If the Panthers remain intent on proceedings with Bridgewater, then bringing in a familiar face to work with him might be the best way to go. Shawn Watson was the quarterbacks’ coach at Louisville when the former first-round pick was lighting up the college system and he would bring a wealth of experience in the role.
Watson was largely credited with getting Bridgewater so NFL ready by the time he was ready to come out.
The signal-caller threw for 3,970 yards, 31 touchdowns, and just four interceptions in 2013, and although things haven’t quite reached these heights in Carolina, reuniting the player with his old college mentor is a realistic option that the Panthers should consider.
Whether Matt Rhule wants a younger candidate given that Watson is 61-years-old. But he would do far worse than at least explore the possibility if they want to give Bridgewater another chance to prove himself in 2021.
