The financial impactions of keeping Moton and Samuel

With this reality regarding the salary cap situation for the Carolina Panthers entering the offseason, the want from fans is that the team re-signs top free agents, right tackle Taylor Moton and wide receiver Curtis Samuel.

The reality is that they might not be able to afford to keep both while taking care of other team needs. Moton, franchise tag or not, could receive up to $15 million per year in salary, while Samuel could earn between $8-12 million thanks to an outstanding series of performances down the stretch.

Panthers Director of Player Negotiations and Salary Cap Manager Samir Suleiman’s recent comments to the team’s official website on potentially resigning both Moton and Samuel also highlighted this predicament in no uncertain terms.

"“It would definitely be difficult to retain both of them, with the cap situation being what it is.”"

Moton is the priority. Carolina ultimately needs upgrades at every other position on the offensive line, so another slot wide receiver can be found during the draft or free agency at a cheaper rate.

Furthermore, it does not make sense to commit those kinds of funds to three wide receivers. Robby Anderson will carry a $12 million cap figure next season and another productive season will see the Panthers left with no choice other than to re-sign him.

D.J. Moore will be entering the last season of his rookie deal and will be expecting a payday after the conclusion of the 2021 season if he’s not extended before then. The new general manager needs to avoid complications, take care of the business, and not wait to extend their No. 1 receiving option.
