Joe Brady’s development of wide receivers

This past spring the Eagles infamously passed on Justin Jefferson in favor of TCU’s Jalen Reagor during the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. It’s too early to determine for sure if Philadelphia made the wrong pick, but Jefferson is perhaps the leading candidate for the league’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award while Reagor has yet to really make a difference on offense.

The reason for connecting the two players?

How about the fact that just this past week Jefferson credited his success in 2020 to playing in Joe Brady’s offense at LSU.

While the two players have significantly different skill-sets, it doesn’t change the fact that Brady – a former wideout himself – is already proving himself as a coach who can mold his receivers into elite weapons.

Just this past season Brady was in large part responsible for career years by both Robby Anderson and Curtis Samuel during his first season with the Carolina Panthers.

In his first year on the roster, Anderson recorded his first 1,000-yard season and applauded Brady and the coaching staff repeatedly for helping him become an all-around receiving threat.

Samuel, who had been used really as just a gadget-player before 2020, set career-bests in yards and receptions. The former second-round pick and Reagor are nearly exactly the same size and can do many of the same things on the field. Even D.J. Moore, who was already becoming one of the better receivers in the NFL, enjoyed the finest season of his young career with Brady at the helm.

It’s not hard to see that Brady is one of the best young coaches at developing wide receivers, and from Philadelphia’s perspective, that’s exactly what they need.

He has an extremely impressive track record of doing so, and with players such as Reagor, Travis Fulgham, and JJ Arcega-Whiteside on the roster, the Eagles are loaded with raw talent at the position. Brady could be just the guy to help them reach their potential.
