4 Panthers players Scott Fitterer shouldn’t give up on in 2021

Tre Boston had plenty of expectations on his shoulders in 2020 after signing a three-year, $18 million deal with an $8 million signing bonus and a further $8 million guaranteed during the offseason. Few would argue he wasn’t deserving of such a financial commitment given how well he performed in 2019. But to say he failed to reach this level once again would be something of an understatement.
Boston was not nearly as influential and had some problems in coverage throughout the campaign. His partnership with free-agent signing Juston Burris was inconsistent at best and it comes as no surprise that defensive coordinator Phil Snow is considering moving Jeremy Chinn back into his usual position of safety after starring at outside linebacker this season.
This will all be dependent on the sort of recruits general manager Scott Fitterer and other decision-makers bring in over the weeks and months ahead. But considering there is no real financial benefit to moving Boston on, it might see the veteran get a reprieve.
He probably deserves one, too.
His limitations are there for all to see. However, Boston was a hugely impactful locker room presence within a young roster and he did come up with some nice plays in big moments, although they were few and far between.
Boston will get the benefit of the doubt. But what comes next for the former North Carolina standout is completely down to how he performs.
