4 free agents the Panthers should monitor on Championship Sunday
By Dean Jones
Jamaal Williams – RB
If the 2020 season taught the Carolina Panthers anything, it’s that having a solid backup at running back is going to be crucial to their overall fortunes.
Christian McCaffrey’s iron man image is now a thing of the past after featuring in just three games during the campaign. Although Mike Davis played well in his absence, the veteran might get a better offer from elsewhere thanks to his high level of production.
If an agreement cannot be reached with Davis, then the Panthers need to cast their eye to someone with the exceptional skills that Jamaal Williams brings to the table. The Green Bay Packers star has played second fiddle to No. 1 option Aaron Jones over the last couple of seasons, but he has still managed to make his presence felt when called upon.
Williams also possesses the dual-threat ability that would ensure the playbook doesn’t have to be altered in the event McCaffrey has to spend some time on the sidelines once again.
Much will depend on what the former fourth-round pick wants from a financial standpoint. But this is an area that Carolina needs to invest in if Davis decides to take his chances elsewhere.
Even if McCaffrey does rid himself of the problems that blighted his season, adding Williams would take some of the pressure off the All-Pro and decrease the risk of further complications on the injury front.
