Carolina Panthers must act fast to land Deshaun Watson
By Dean Jones
The Carolina Panthers need to act fast if they want to pull off a bombshell trade for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.
The situation surrounding Deshaun Watson seems to be changing with every passing hour. His unhappiness with the Texans isn’t exactly a secret and although the Carolina Panthers would undoubtedly be interested in bringing him to the organization, whether they have enough in the way of assets to tempt Houston is another matter entirely.
Watson is reportedly interested in returning to the Carolinas, where he starred in college at Clemson, but Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald stated that the signal-caller’s two preferred destinations are the Jets and Dolphins, in that order.
Both teams have more to offer than the Panthers could provide. But that should not stop new general manager Scott Fitterer from at least putting a package together that would make the Texans think twice about parting ways with their franchise player.
During his introductory presser, Fitterer stated that Carolina will be “in on every deal”. However, they need to come up with a decision – and quickly – if they want to become a real contender in the Watson sweepstakes.
Fitterer and head coach Matt Rhule will put the proposal together, with owner David Tepper also set to be heavily involved in such a landmark trade.
This has the potential to be an absolute game-changer, of that there is little doubt. But time is of the essence in no uncertain terms given how quickly this precarious situation is evolving.
