Panthers 2021 Draft: Studs and duds from Day 2 at Senior Bowl
By Dean Jones
Jamie Newman – QB (Georgia)
There were some nice throws from Jamie Newman during their second day of Senior Bowl practice. But the quarterback will no doubt feel disappointed by the level of production he demonstrated in front of NFL scouts and the Carolina Panthers coaching staff.
It’s only natural to expect some sort of rust from a player that opted out of the 2020 season on COVID-19 health grounds. Newman never got the chance to play for the Georgia Bulldogs after transferring from Wake Forest and means that he must nail the evaluation process to boost his draft stock in the coming weeks.
Throwing back-to-back interceptions wasn’t part of the script.
So day three is a hugely important one for Newman.
He does have some likable traits to call upon providing there isn’t too much in the way of pressure on his shoulders from the word go. Carolina looks to be stuck with Teddy Bridgewater until there is a realistic out on his deal in 2022 unless he can become part of a potential trade. So bringing in Newman would give the prospect time to find his feet in the NFL before possibly taking over the duties under center.
However, he’ll need to show more than what we saw overall on day two of practice, making the third set of team drills his most vital of the week in Mobile.
