Which Carolina Panthers players are it vital for the team to build around if they want to progress and become a realistic postseason challenger in 2021?

It was an encouraging start to Matt Rhule’s reign with the Carolina Panthers. The head coach left a big mark regarding his approach after arriving from the college ranks and his ability to bring a young, unproven roster together in difficult circumstances was a real eye-catching feature during a 2020 season that eventually finished with a 5-11 record and a case of what might have been.

Carolina might have entered the postseason discussion had they not folded down the stretch of close games. This is all part of the learning experience and one that should stand in good stead when competitive action begins in 2021. But there are some big decisions awaiting the organization if they want to progress further in the coming months.

With financial resources not what anybody expected thanks to COVID-19 losses, the Panthers will need to make more sacrifices than they probably envisaged when a long-term plan was formed. The introduction of general manager Scott Fitterer is sure to shake things up even more, so it will be another offseason of drama in Carolina with so much uncertainty surrounding key personnel.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at four Panthers players that the team has to build around for success in 2021.

Taylor Moton – Carolina Panthers OT

First of all, the Panthers must re-sign Taylor Moton this offseason. This should be priority No. 1 and although it is going to cost Carolina, the former second-round pick has proven he is worth every cent coming his way.

Once the Panthers do this, they have to get better around him.

One expects the four remaining starters to not come back with three out of contract and Matt Paradis a candidate for release given the financial savings involved, so additional players of starting quality need to be sought in free agency or the 2021 NFL Draft.

Fortunately for Carolina, this year’s class of incoming protectors is a deep one.

Selecting two or three offensive linemen with their picks is probably the smart way to go. If they can also secure the services of an experienced veteran at one of the positions, it could see their protection improve considerably next season.
