Jason Verrett – CB

  • 2020 team – San Francisco 49ers

Persistence may have finally paid off for Jason Verrett. The cornerback has endured a torrid run of injuries over the last few years. But his talent is unquestioned and was on full show for the San Francisco 49ers in 2020.

It’s amazing what a run of consistent games have done for Verrett. He was incredibly assured in coverage and ended up being the No. 8 ranked player at the position by Pro Football Focus as a result of his efforts.

This will not have gone unnoticed by any would-be suitor in free agency. One cannot help but be wary of his problems staying healthy – so the Carolina Panthers need to do their due diligence if they want to take him on – but his aggressive approach to every down and ability to lead is something that Matt Rhule demanded from every member of his roster over the last year.

Verrett might decide to take any extension offer from the 49ers, who placed a tremendous amount of faith in him despite the obvious concerns this season. He repaid them with some exceptional displays and providing they can free up the necessary funds with a little more than $9 million on their salary-cap, a deal should be worked out if there is mutual interest.

However, the Panthers have a need to boost their options at cornerback and it’s unlikely that Verrett would cost the earth.
