Derrick Brown tempter

First of all, we are not saying the Carolina Panthers should look at trading Derrick Brown in their possible pursuit of Deshaun Watson. The defensive tackle enjoyed a fantastic rookie season in 2020 and answered all the doubts that surfaced before entering the league. If the former Auburn standout can make some additional strides in the coming years, he could be the team’s anchor on the interior for the next decade.

Houston is reportedly looking for a couple of young defensive studs as part of any deal for Watson. Carolina has plenty of those after a campaign where Phil Snow’s unit progressed encouragingly. But losing someone like Brown and by choice could have a knock-on effect regarding their rebuild.

Every avenue will be explored by the Panthers as they look to improve on their five-win season. General manager Scott Fitterer said he wants Carolina to be in on every deal, but giving up Brown and some valuable draft selections might be too steep of a price to pay.

It becomes more realistic if the Panthers can convince the Texans to take on Teddy Bridgewater and Shaq Thompson, too. But even then, any decision to part ways with the No. 7 overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft would be met with uproar, to put it mildly.

Brown is only going to get better and he already commands enough respect to be one of the league’s most double-teamed players at the position. With the Panthers also sure to release veteran Kawann Short, they’d be foolish to include him in a trade package no matter how good Watson is.
