4 pros and cons to the Panthers trading for Sam Darnold
By Dean Jones
Sam Darnold’s time with Robby Anderson
If Sam Darnold found his way onto the Carolina Panthers, it would see the quarterback link up once again with wide receiver Robby Anderson. The pair had some success together during their time with the New York Jets and there could be even more to come given what the 2020 free-agent signing showed in his first year on the team.
Anderson went from being known as a deep threat on the Jets to a wideout that can make an impact all over the field. Reuniting with his former college coach Matt Rhule gave the player a new lease of life and the Panthers benefitted significantly as a result.
Although his numbers dipped towards the end of the campaign, Anderson still went over 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in his career and the decision to bring him to Carolina was a shrewd one.
Now, it would be wise for Rhule and general manager Scott Fitterer to seek Anderson’s counsel before formally making a trade offer for Darnold.
He’ll know more about the quarterback than most and it’s very possible the USC product can enjoy similar progression away from MetLife Stadium that the receiver experienced in 2020.
The duo’s previous chemistry together should enable them to hit the ground running, which would be a major asset for Darnold during his transition to a new environment.
