Carolina Panthers should be on red alert for Russell Wilson
By Dean Jones
There appears to be increasing uncertainty surrounding the future of quarterback Russell Wilson, which should put the Carolina Panthers on red alert.
Some friction might be brewing for the first time between Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks. The quarterback broke character with some remarks about the standard of protection in front of him in 2020 and the need for the team to get better, which has reportedly not gone down well with the powers that be within the organization.
Although Wilson has yet to ask for a trade, the situation is a “fluid” one according to a source speaking to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio. The former Wisconsin standout has been a huge part of the Seahawks’ culture for almost a decade and the thought of him in another team’s uniform seems unfathomable.
However, this is going to be an unprecedented offseason for quarterback movement and Wilson would immediately become one of the hottest commodities if he asked for a move away from Seattle. The Carolina Panthers have made no secret of their desire to get an upgrade on Teddy Bridgewater and are being aggressive in their investigation of every possible option available.
Much like the situation surrounding Deshaun Watson, players like Wilson don’t become available when they have so much to offer every day.
It would take a king’s ransom to acquire the 2020 Walter Payton Man of the Year. But although the Seahawks might not even entertain the thought of letting their franchise signal-caller go, this increasing unrest between both parties is something the Panthers need to keep a close eye on.
And in new general manager Scott Fitterer, Carolina has the inside track on what sort of package it’s going to take should Wilson become available.
