Carolina Panthers sign a DT in free agency

If the Carolina Panthers want to be a bit bolder in their attempts to find a long-term successor for Kawann Short, then making a splash in free agency is something that will undoubtedly come up for discussion. This would be a little more expensive than relying on current roster members or a 2021 NFL Draft prospect, but the potential impact would be immediate.

Carolina’s defense could be a force to be reckoned with when competitive action gets underway in 2021 providing they get their recruitment right during the preparation period. Fixing other positions and getting a couple of key men tied down to long-term deals will rightfully take priority. But if there is some money left over to pursue a difference-maker to put alongside Derrick Brown, the Panthers should pull the trigger.

There are plenty of intriguing names worthy of consideration. Players like Leonard Williams and Larry Ogunjobi would make their presence felt from the outset, although the cost to acquire them would be substantial.

This is a precarious situation for the Panthers, who need to spend every cent wisely to strengthen their options in free agency but not risk their long-term plans for progression in the process. Owner David Tepper won’t want Carolina to be also-rans for much longer, so whether this means being a bit more aggressive for out of contract veterans in the hope they can make a difference remains to be seen.

Carolina also has plenty of notable depth at the position if Efe Obada is brought back, which might make them think twice about overspending just for the sake of it.
