3 potential trade partners for Panthers OLB Shaq Thompson

In an ideal world, the Carolina Panthers can put Shaq Thompson in a trade package that lands star quarterback Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans. It’s going to take a haul of NFL Draft picks and another talented defensive player to further sweeten the deal. But considering the prize at the end of it is a top-five signal-caller who is just entering his prime, the juice is worth the squeeze.
Thompson proved last season that to maximize his production, the player needs someone of high-quality alongside him. The Texans could provide this thanks to the presence of Zach Cunningham.
If Watson does get his wish and departs Houston, the inside linebacker would arguably be the team’s most talented remaining player with J.J. Watt also released recently and subsequently joining the Arizona Cardinals on a two-year deal.
Building a successful defense around Cunningham will be crucial. Thompson would help their cause and is a definite upgrade on players such as Benardrick McKinney and Jacob Martin. The Texans also have just north of $33 million in cap space available, which would make his contract a non-factor.
Houston remains steadfast in their belief that things can be worked out with Watson, although the former Clemson star is reportedly willing to do whatever it takes to force the organization’s hand sooner rather than later.
Rumors are swirling about Carolina “paying any price” to get Watson to the Panthers. If that means letting Thomspon go, it’s a small sacrifice compared to what else might be included in the deal.
