4 Panthers players who could be extended with extra cap space
By Dean Jones
Robby Anderson – Carolina Panthers WR
We finally know what type of wide receiver Robby Anderson is after he finally freed himself from the New York Jets. He came to the Carolina Panthers with a reputation for being a deep-ball specialist, but reuniting with his former college coach Matt Rhule saw him emerge as a complete wideout who could make a difference all over the field.
Sure, there is still blistering speed going down the field where Anderson is concerned.
But his ability to get open quickly off the line of scrimmage became a significant asset to call upon over short and intermediate routes.
Anderson is embarking on the last year of the free-agent contract he signed with the Panthers last spring, which comes with an $8 million base salary and $12 million salary-cap hit. Another strong year for the player might see him enter a financial bracket that Carolina cannot match, so getting him extended now would undoubtedly avoid further complications in the not-too-distant future.
It’s clear Anderson is enjoying his football once again following a torrid few years at MetLife Stadium on a team who constantly disappointed under Adam Gase. He’d obviously jump at the chance of an extended stay in Carolina and could thrive even more with a new quarterback slinging the football downfield more efficiently.
