Richard Rodgers – TE

  • 2020 team – Philadelphia Eagles

A career backup since being taken in the third round by the Green Bay Packers in 2014, Richard Rodgers has shown the ability to step in when needed and more importantly for the Carolina Panthers, catch the ball out of the tight end spot. He also shows the willingness to take the big hit when necessary and the strength to fight through contact for extra yards.

In a year where he only started four games and was targeted just 31 times, Rodgers hauled in 24 catches for 345 receiving yards. A stat line that single-handedly eclipses the entire Panthers tight end group from 2020.

The need at tight end for Carolina has been well reported and whether they address this in free agency or the draft, Rodgers would be a nice addition to the room.

If they decide to go the route of the draft he would be a veteran presence to mentor a young player. If not, Rodgers would be starting ready and give them much-needed production from a largely forgotten position.

Carolina Panthers lack size in the passing game.

The Panthers receiver group, while excellent last year, lacks the size and strength to go up and get a 50/50 ball. Something that has been lacking in that room for quite some time.

Rodgers may not be the big-name star most people want them to bring in. But one can’t deny that a 6-foot-4 player with a 77 percent catch success rate would be a nice piece, especially in the red zone.

With a crowded tight end room in Philadelphia, the Eagles just might have to let him walk. If they do, Carolina should come calling.
