4 free agents the Carolina Panthers have missed out on so far
By Dean Jones
Shaquil Griffin – CB
According to multiple reports, the Carolina Panthers made a strong offer for cornerback Shaquil Griffin before he eventually penned a substantial deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. This was an offer they simply couldn’t match with so many needs elsewhere. So it is just a case of going back to the drawing board and looking at another veteran who will cost a little less in the way of financial commitment.
It wasn’t a big surprise to see general manager Scott Fitterer look towards his former employer for new recruits. He’ll know more about those free agents on the Seattle Seahawks than most and it’s hard not to look at Griffin’s production of late and not think he couldn’t have made a notable impact from the word go.
The former third-round pick has two seasons of solid production under his belt, which saw Griffin accumulate three interceptions in 2020. Had the Panthers managed to secure his services then slotting him opposite Donte Jackson in the secondary would have given Carolina an athletic, pacey pair capable of covering their men in an accomplished fashion.
Sadly, this now won’t be the case.
Griffin isn’t the only fish in the sea, so to speak. But he was one of the best available free agents on the market in no uncertain terms.
