Cutting ties with Tre Boston just one year after he signed a lucrative extension is a damning indictment of what the Carolina Panthers thought of his production in 2020. The safety simply didn’t reach the same heights of 2019 that saw the player named to Pro Football Focus’ All-Clutch Team, and it now appears defensive coordinator Phil Snow will move Jeremy Chinn to the backend following their recent free-agent signings.

As for Boston, his presence in the locker room will be missed. But the simple fact of the matter is he just wasn’t reliable enough to be considered a viable option.

That’s not to say another team with more realistic postseason ambitions won’t put a call his way. The Minnesota Vikings are looking for help in this particular area after they decided to let Anthony Harris leave as expected, with the prospect of pairing Boston with All-Pro Harrison Smith an enticing one, to put it mildly.

There is an obvious connection between Boston and the Washington Football Team, with former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera and general manager Marty Hurney part of the staff. The respected figure seemed to get the best out of Boston before he was fired in 2019, so a potential reunion on a defense that is a force to be reckoned with would be hard to turn down.
