Which remaining free agents could be signed as plug-and-play options for the Carolina Panthers in 2021?

It’s been a relatively prudent opening period of free agency for the Carolina Panthers. General manager Scott Fitterer has had one eye on keeping spare finances available in an ever-changing personnel climate as teams cut highly-paid veterans loose due to a shrinking cap. So there might be plenty more activity to come before it’s time to select the next batch of college recruits via the 2021 NFL Draft.

Carolina’s primary focus has been the defensive side of the football so far. The likes of Morgan Fox, Haason Reddick, and Denzel Perryman will solidify an improving unit greatly. But much more will be needed across the board if the Panthers want to realistically enter the postseason discussion next time around.

There is the obvious predicament regarding plans at quarterback to consider, plus the need to give prominent players such as D.J. Moore contract extensions sooner rather than later. However, this is a golden opportunity in the current climate to acquire some impact players that can assist on short-term deals to get them over the hump and into the playoffs.

Carolina Panthers want to go BPA in the draft.

We are still relatively early in the recruitment period. But it won’t be long before the primary focus turns to the 2021 NFL Draft. If Fitterer wants to be in a position where he is able to select the best player available, then further additions will be needed.

With this in mind, here are four free agents still available that come with plug-and-play potential where the Panthers are concerned.

Eric Fisher – OT

  • 2020 team – Kansas City Chiefs

One of the biggest names available from an offensive line standpoint is Eric Fisher. The former No. 1 overall selection was released by the Kansas City Chiefs as part of a cost-cutting measure and it might come as a surprise to see the veteran still searching for a new home.

This might not be the case for much longer. But the Carolina Panthers have a glaring hole on their blindside protection with Russell Okung unlikely to come back and this might not come with the sort of financial commitment it would have done in the past.

Fisher has proven pedigree at the highest level and also possesses a Super Bowl ring from his time with the Chiefs. Slotting the Central Michigan product opposite stud right tackle Taylor Moton – who came out of Western Michigan – would give the Panthers a solid bookend presence that would only benefit whoever is under center.
