3 things for Carolina Panthers to watch at Justin Fields’ pro day
By Dean Jones
Justin Fields’ footwork
Another area that the Carolina Panthers will need to watch closely where Justin Fields is concerned would be footwork in small spaces. The quarterback can get out on the move easily when the opportunity arises, but he has been criticized for not avoiding pressure in the pocket efficiently on obvious passing downs.
Taking snaps under center and moving quickly into throws would be a good place to start. Obviously, there won’t be speedy edge rushers looking to take Fields to the ground at Ohio State’s pro day. But if the prospect can prove he’s made the necessary adjustments then it should stand him in good stead.
Teams may have already made their mind up about Fields.
However, considering how much the Panthers have coveted the likes of Matthew Stafford and Deshaun Watson in the trade market, they possess more interest than most in what they see from Fields during drills.
The Panthers whiffed on Bridgewater, especially their decision to give a player who hadn’t started a full season since 2015 a three-year, $63 million deal with a $15 million signing bonus and $33 million guaranteed. They cannot afford to get their next quarterback move wrong, so Fields will need to leave no doubt he might just be the man to lead them moving forward.
