Carolina Panthers trade offer No. 1

If the Carolina Panthers want to make a call regarding the No. 2 overall selection, then they’ll have to come up with a substantial package that makes the New York Jets sit up and take notice. They hold all the cards and leverage in this situation, so even a monumental offer might not be enough to sway their current plans.

This is going to cost an extreme amount of draft capital in return. Two first-round picks over the next two years, this year’s second-rounder, and swapping No. 2 for No. 8 would be the minimum it would take for the Jets to begin discussions.

Sam Darnold does have some talent, although it was widely underused by head coach Adam Gase, who is no longer around. New man Robert Saleh has been complementary of the former USC star of late, but whether that’s enough to ensure he gets another chance on the final year of his deal in 2021 is up for debate.

The Jets might not get a better chance to obtain a franchise player under center again considering the improvements made to the roster this offseason. They still have a ton of cap space to bring in more reinforcements – the NFL’s third-most at $31.25 million – but it will all count for nothing if they don’t have a quarterback who can put points on the board.

This deal is unlikely to be enough. But it could just open up discussions.
