Get a CB partner for Donte Jackson

The Carolina Panthers got some improved production from cornerback Donte Jackson down the stretch last time out after a frustrating campaign thanks in no small part to a toe injury. He looked like a player with shutdown potential on the outside and if he can remain healthy in 2021, it’s going to make a substantial difference to their chances.

However, the need for another quality starting option on the opposite side of the field is there for all to see. Rasul Douglas is hitting the free-agent market and is unlikely to come back, with slot corner Corn Elder taking his chances elsewhere after signing for the Detroit Lions.

Rashaan Melvin was brought in on the cheap. But he is seen as more of a camp body rather than a player that can make a lasting contribution from the word go.

As is the case with offensive linemen, there appears to be plenty of viable options in the free-agent market that Carolina could snag at good prices. Veterans are probably just looking for an opportunity rather than a big payday in the current climate and especially three weeks into free agency, which might make general manager Scott Fitterer’s patient approach pay dividends.

This is also a pretty deep cornerback class with some outstanding prospects such as Patrick Surtain and Caleb Farley at the top of the order. But there is some extreme value to acquire in the mid-to-late rounds if the Panthers play their cards right.
