Javonte Williams – North Carolina

There’s a lot to be excited about with Javonte Williams. Perhaps the most intriguing running back prospect in this class, the former North Carolina Tar Heel brings a lethal combination of physicality and speed that made it almost impossible for defenders to tackle him in college. While splitting carries basically 50/50 with Michael Carter last season, the prospect tallied 1,140 yards on the ground and 19 touchdowns in just 11 games.

With that type of production, it’s curious that ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay recently called Williams the draft’s “most underrated” running back. Frankly, I couldn’t agree more.

At 5-foot-10 and 220 pounds, Williams has the size to bully defensive backs and his 4.55 40-yard dash time suggests he has the speed to beat linebackers. A few of his comps include Mark Ingram, Ronald Jones, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

At UNC’s Pro Day, Williams received the ultimate stamp of approval from Carolina Panthers legend and NFL Network analyst, Steve Smith, during coverage of the event.

"“He’s a dynamic player. I could see him being a No. 1 running back on any team… (Williams is) a mean, vicious runner. (He) led the nation in missed tackles.”"

It’ll be interesting to see if front offices agree with these recent endorsements enough to make him a Day 1 selection. The Panthers have other needs, but if Williams falls to them in the second round (No. 39 overall) it may become very difficult to pass on what could be the best running back in this draft.
