5 Panthers players who could change jersey numbers in 2022
By Dean Jones
Christian McCaffrey – Carolina Panthers RB
This would be arguably the biggest profile name in the entire league to switch numbers if it eventually came to pass. Christian McCaffrey has worn No. 22 throughout his professional career so far after being drafted by the Carolina Panthers, but the temptation is obviously there when it comes to going back to single-digits.
McCaffrey enjoyed a phenomenal first three years in the NFL and deservingly received a bumper new deal prior to the 2020 campaign. What came next wasn’t in the script, however, with the All-Pro missing all but three games thanks to ankle, shoulder, and quad problems after being available for every game from 2017-19.
It was a body blow for the Panthers and one that played a significant role in the team finishing with a 5-11 record for the second straight year. McCaffrey appears to be a man on a mission next time around judging by how hard he is clearly working this offseason, and there wouldn’t be a better time for him to revert back to No. 5.
The number should be readily available. Teddy Bridgewater’s status with the organization is hanging by a thread following the trade for Sam Darnold and it would be a big surprise if he is still around once the NFL Draft comes to a conclusion.
McCaffrey’s jersey sales are through the roof, so the player would no doubt take the fans into consideration before making this change.
