5 NFL Draft targets in every round for the Carolina Panthers in 2021
By Dean Jones
Carolina Panthers round No. 6 targets
- Tre’ McKitty – TE (Georgia)
- Shi Smith – WR (South Carolina)
- Shaka Toney – DE/OLB (Penn State)
- Khalil Herbert – RB (Virginia Tech)
- Deommodore Lenoir – CB (Oregon)
One would suspect this is where the Carolina Panthers will look to boost depth in areas of the field that might be stronger than others. They only have two selections in Round 6 after giving one up in the trade for Sam Darnold, although it could be bolstered further depending on whether the team decides to trade down for additional capital.
Getting a talented back to slot behind Christian McCaffrey on the depth chart is a very possible option at this stage of the draft. A prospect like Khalil Herbert comes with a ton of upside and in addition to being a dual-threat weapon during his time at Virginia Tech, if he can improve his pass-catching prowess then having him and the All-Pro in the same backfield at certain times is a mouth-watering proposition.
Deommodore Lenoir is someone who’s met virtually with the Panthers and might end up being a late-round flier for additional options at the cornerback spot. Shaka Toney’s upside is there for all to see and if he does end up falling this far, Carolina should look to make him their next Penn State edge rusher after drafting Yetur Gross-Matos from the Nittany Lions in 2020.
Two Senior Bowl standouts might also be available in Round 6. Shi Smith and Tre’ McKitty both demonstrated their eye-catching potential in front of Carolina’s coaching staff and this won’t have gone unnoticed when they decided on their shortlist.
