Round No. 3 (Pick No. 73)

Ifeatu Melifonwu – CB (Syracuse)

The Carolina Panthers do have some depth problems at the cornerback position despite the recent acquisition of A.J. Bouye in free agency. The former Pro Bowler is suspended for the first two games of the 2021 season after violating the league’s substance abuse policy, so bringing in an exciting college prospect with a ton of upside within their opening three selections is a real possibility.

Ifeatu Melifonwu fits the bill in no uncertain terms. The Syracuse product has a lot of likable traits that should make a smooth transition to the professional ranks and with a little more in the way of development, he should emerge as a productive starter in no time at all.

Melifonwu is huge for a cornerback but does not lack in athleticism. His length enables him to contest catches extremely well and has the physicality to get wide receivers off their routes quickly.

His ability to assist in run support is another hugely impressive element to his game that shouldn’t be overlooked. Providing Melifonwu’s route anticipation gets a little better, someone is going to have a real player on their hands.

Rookie corners tend to go through more complications than most during their initial adjustment. Having Bouye and Donte Jackson to lean on would be great for Melifonwu’s development.
